~ Standing on the deck of mv Riviera as she sails from Devil’s Island off French Guiana, you watch an Ariane rocket blasting off into space from Kourou with a communications satellite on board. You recall the hospital, the church and the cemetery of the penal colony here, from where thousands of French prisoners never returned home. You also remember your visit to a Wayama Indian Tukusipan (ceremonial hut) with its hand painted ceiling of colorful forest animals. ~
